That last 3/4 of a mile was a real killer... but now you are at the highest peak for miles around. You get a quick picture of John and Raman, and they get a picture of you. You have a snack and some water and take a break.
The trip back should be easy, but you quickly realize that not everyone is part mountain goat like John. He is jogging down the mountain, and Raman is hanging back so he doesn't blow a knee. You hang back with Raman and take switchback after long switchback down the mountain. After you cross a river you realize that you are going to have to hike back up the 4.5 miles that you earlier hiked down, if you want to get out of the forest before dark. Raman says you should just spend the night in one of the tents pitched along the trail. Meanwhile, John is getting further ahead. You grit your teeth and get into a rhythm. Soon you are back to the parking lot and John is waiting in the warm car. The hike only took 5 and a half hours, which was excellent time. It amazes you that the sun is still up. The days must be longer in New Mexico. Once Raman gets there you head back to John's waiting hot tub.
